I am re-envisioning my writing life.
- What do I enjoy writing about?
- What do I enjoy reading?
Simple — frugal, anti-consumptive, DIY/maker living with a touch of the radical and revolutionary.
Thus, that is what I will write, here on the blog and by extension, on Medium.
Recently, my focus has been fractured. There are the things I need (and want!) to do to maintain the homestead. There is the work that I must do to afford to live in this world. And finally, there is writing.
My main energy output when it comes to writing has been on the fiction novel, The Ragman, that I have been working on. There is nothing there to share publically, not yet. Especially since I want to go the trad publishing route for this novel.
I have been rushing medium pieces, because I feel I need to keep publishing. When I skip a week or two, my beloved (and much appreciated!) readers let me know.
It is time to adjust expectations.
I will no longer commit to publishing weekly on Medium. Instead, I will publish better thought out, written, and researched essays once or twice a month.
As for the blog, I am going to focus on what I like to write and what I like to read, and clicks/popularity be damned. It is my blog and my space to use as serves me best.
What you, the reader can expect, is simple.
- I will publish more or less weekly on the blog. I will examine those bits of living that appeal to me on the blog, in depth.
- From there I will likely spin off Medium essays. Better written and better researched, when applicable.
- If you like my blog writing, you are welcome to support me with a donation. I’ll be adding a link to the home page or sidebar soon. Soon is a relative measurement of time, but expect to see changes by the end of summer.
I will provide a friend link, in a blog post, to the medium essays. If you are a Medium subscriber, I encourage you to log into Medium before clicking the link so that I can receive payment for your reads. I also encourage you, subscriber or not, to share any friend links for the pieces you enjoy with your own network.
This sounds awful, but the truth isn’t always what we want it to be — I have been selling out my writing a bit, by putting out rushed and poorly written essays on Medium, simply to pay the bills. True, I didn’t write about clickbait topics that went against my values, but I also didn’t do anywhere near my best. I am a person that truly believes that our characters are our most important currency, and cutting corners and doing rush jobs are no way to foster a trustworthy character. So no more of that!
Now I say, fuck the publishing schedule! Life isn’t a game and it isn’t about the hustle. Life is for living, and it’s time I live it the best ways that I know.
I will see you all soon.
Yours in hope,
